Birds Of A Feather

Audubon South Carolina & The Coastal Conservation League – December 2018

Birds of a feather flocked together at a wonderful program sponsored by Audubon South Carolina and the Coastal Conservation League as Sharon Richardson, executive director of Audubon, SC  (shown in center of the photo above)  welcomed John Fitzpatrick (wearing bird tie). He described how studies and personal involvement with migration can help save the world.

Of special interest was the Motus Tracking System. Placed on a tower, it identifies signals from banded birds as they pass by, so while you were sleeping, the next morning you learn that birds from Canada, Maine, or the Caribbean flew past. While too expensive for individuals now, such technology may become much more affordable in the next decade. Live information like this could engage students’ curiosity as they see that how their school or community, though perhaps seemingly isolated, is in fact connected to the wider world.

With me was my best friend Billy Wingfield (at my left in above photo), certainly a bird of a unique type. Another favorite bird (not shown) was Edward Crawford, former member of the Lab’s board.
